OUR RULES
AT THE SUB-ZERO RACE, IT'S ALL ABOUT THE ULTIMATE TEST FOR ELECTRIC DRIVING UNDER EXTREME CONDITIONS. A TEST FOR MAN AND MACHINE. IN ORDER TO START AND COMPLETE THE SUB-ZERO RACE WE HAVE A SET OF RULES TO LIVE BY.
RULE 1 - COMPLY WITH TRAFFIC RULES AND REGULATIONS
Don't be misled by the word "race" in our name. It's about smart driving, and you must always - at any time or place - adhere to the applicable speed limits and traffic rules. You won't arrive first by breaking all speed limits, but by driving smart and maximizing your range. Each car is equipped with trackers that record your speed. If you exceed the existing speed limits, your team will be disqualified. In short, it's not a road race. Exceeding speed limits and dangerous driving behavior result in disqualification.
RULE 2 - GET YOUR CAR AND TEAM GEAR READY
To participate in the Sub-Zero Race, your electric car must be equipped with winter tires. By this, we mean "100% winter tires". All-season tires are not considered suitable in this situation. In our opinion, all-season tires do not provide sufficient grip in the harsh winter conditions in which we drive. The tread depth of your winter tires must be at least 3mm. Suitable winter tyres must be mounted on all wheels, including a full-size spare.
Spike tires as a replacement for winter tires are allowed, but not mandatory (note that spike tires are prohibited in the Netherlands and Germany, in which case you must change your tire set en route in Scandinavia. You must organize the swap yourself). In addition to winter tires on all wheels, it is also mandatory to carry snow chains for all wheels and carrying a full-size spare (on winter tire) as a replacement for a temporary spare.
Additionally, a kinetic tow rope is mandatory. EVs are not easy or impossible to tow. The kinetic rope is therefore only intended to pull you out by locals over a short distance if your EV gets stuck in the snow. Furthermore, in your personal gear kit, include extra blankets, winter sleeping bags, flashlights, and vaseline (for frostbite prevention) in case you get stranded on the way. These items, except for overnight stays, must remain in your car at all times.
RULE 3 - TEAM MINIMUM OF 2 DRIVERS
A team can only enter if the team consists of at least 2 drivers. This is for the reason that you will likely be driving day and night for your record attempt, and it's important to be able to switch drivers. It is also possible to expand your team with a 3rd and 4th driver.
RULE 4 - no fossil-fueled towing or transportation
Avoid any fossil-fueled means of transportation. This includes ferries. If you board a ferry or transport your car for any part of the route, your team is out.
RULE 5 - FACTORY CAR MODELS ONLY
If you wish to compete for a title, you must participate with a factory-spec model. You are not allowed to make modifications to save weight, such as removing a rear seat or spare wheel. If you attempt to bend the rules in any way, you can still participate, but you will be disqualified from a record attempt, certificate, and official ranking. This will be checked at the start and finish. These rules do not apply to student teams in the open class. Please be aware of the following exeption on the 'factory cars models only' rule; many models do standard not carry a spare anymore. If this applies for your factory-spec model you have to make sure you get one on board. It is mandatory to have a full-sized spare - equiped with a 100% winter tyre - in your EV.
RULE 6 - OPEN CLASS FOR UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES
To stimulate innovation we offer an 'open class' category for student teams that are associated with programs of technical universities or colleges. Every modifications on their EV entry (self constructed or existing models) are allowed as long as the vehicle holds an license registration and meets the insurance and legal requirements to drive on public roads in Europe.
